What is a rite of passage?

A rite of passage is a ritaul event that marks a person's progress from one status to another. It is a universal phenomenon which can show social hierachies, values and beliefs are important in specific cultures.

Rites of passage are often ceremonies surrounding events such as other milestones within puberty coming of age, marriage and death. Important ceremonies such as baptism, confirmation are considered important rites of passage for people of their respective religions.

This is an excellent example of  a rite of passage. It is about a girl who has been sexually abused and works in a strip club for money. She also has relationships with unreliable men who end up in prison. She carries herself in a very negative way and is shocked when she finds out she has HIV. This is her rite of passge. The narrative goes back in time and she changes for the better being a hairdresser instead of a strripper, having a responsible husband which makes her carry herself better. In the end she dose not have HIV and she goes on to have a happy life.
